About

I keep coming back to a quote by Graham Greene about Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, it gave him ‘the sense of a mind speaking to itself with no one to listen’. Now I have read Great Expectations a couple of times and I don’t know that I ever sensed that myself, but Greene’s quote has always kind of captivated me, and I think there is a little of that in weblogging. In some ways it is a conversation with oneself – commentary and readership are nice but not necessary.

And writing is a great way to more structurally formalize what is we think and feel – it requires us to digest, synthesize and try to encapsulate our experiences. It is a distillation of our life – it is hard work because it forces us to make concrete those fleeting feelings and thoughts.

Also a weblog requires content. My life needs some spicing up right now, and maybe this is a way to force me to get out there and do some interesting things, get engaged so that I have something to write about. This weblog is an inducement to act and reflect – to take notice of what is happening in my life.
